A 24-year-old Muslim bride from West Bengal's Murshidabad asked for books as 'mehr' from the groom's family.
A bride in West Bengal has set an example after demanding 60 books as mehr, the dowry that a groom needs to pay, from her would-be in-laws. Moyna Khatun, 24, a resident of Murshidabad's Suti and an arts graduate from DN College in Kalyani University, got married to Mizanur Rahman, 24, a geography graduate from Bhagalpur University, on Monday.
Though it was an arranged marriage, Moyna made it clear to her parents that she would demand books instead of the traditional mehr from the groom's family when the couple's wedding was being discussed in January.
She had no interest in traditional mohor, which can go up to Rs 50,000 these days. Initially shocked and awed by her parents’ request, Mizanur’s family happily accepted the demand, a family member of Moyna told The Telegraph.
Mizanur's family not only accepted Moyna's demand but also gave more books in addition to her demand.
Residents of Kidderpore village, the native place of Moyna, were surprised when the groom's family carried cartons full of books including the Quran in Bengali, works of Rabindranath Tagore, Nazrul Islam and Bibhutibhushan Bandhopadhyay.
A member of Mizanur's family said that they were overjoyed with Moyna's unusual request and would also give her an undisclosed amount of cash for personal expenses.
